Dear HMEI Members,

It’s great to have this opportunity to serve you.  I’ve heard from many of you and hope to have a chance to meet all of you in the coming months.  I encourage everyone to contact me personally at janderson@earthnetworks.com.

This is a pivotal time for the Global Weather Enterprise (GWE) and the importance of HMEI couldn’t be higher.  The world faces expanding needs for better – more accurate, reliable and comprehensive – weather, hydrological and environmental intelligence than ever before.  As climate change and trends in human development continue, climate and environmental risks increase.  In this year’s report from the World Economic Forum, again the top three risks to economic development are all weather, climate and environment related.  Meeting these challenges requires all the resources that can be organized.  The private sector plays a critical role and our standing within the overall GWE is increasing.  More than ever before, government agencies, the WMO and other parties are embracing the private sector to partner with them to meet today’s challenges.

The industry is changing rapidly and we must rise to meet the challenge.  Our industry is growing faster than ever.  There is significant new investment and consolidation within the private sector and new amazing capabilities are being accelerated and brought to market.  Our industry will expand further as we deliver flawless products and services with the highest level of integrity.

HMEI, being granted Working Arrangements status with the World Meteorological Organization, stands at the pivot point of these dynamics.  As the principle representative of the industry to the WMO we can influence important policy decisions that impact the growth of our industry.  The WMO is restructuring and embracing private sector engagement.  It’s a critical time for HMEI members to participate in all the technical working groups and other forums where we can contribute to the health of the GWE.  In the coming weeks and months we will be communicating more with you to ask for your participation.

HMEI is active in many areas as we navigate this dynamic time:

  • We have elected a new representative of the services sector to serve on our executive board, Ilse Gayl.
  • We have an ongoing dialog with WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas on all the WMO restructuring.
  • We are working closely with Dimitar Ivanov the new WMO representative in charge of Public, Private Engagement
  • We continue to finalize the tender specifications project and are making significant progress toward the broad adoption of these specifications
  • We are working to strengthen the ethical standards of our industry in cooperation with the WMO as part of our formal working arrangement
  • We are participating in the data policy working group on a number of issues particularly important for our services sector members related to open and fair data policies and the global data exchange

It will be my pleasure to hear from you on the issues that are most important for your company.  Please come forward and help HMEI have the impact and influence it must to help the Global Weather Enterprise grow and succeed.

With my very best regards,

Jim
